Why Skyridge matters
Skyridge closed the e-Card era in 2003, the final English set built around the e-Reader dot-code strips before the Nintendo-era EX sets rewrote the game. It arrived as a sister set to Aquapolis, sharing that trilogy's dense, oversized numbering and its habit of hiding the best cards at the very end of the list. Where most sets of the day felt disposable, Skyridge feels like a farewell — a broad, ambitious checklist that rewards patience and punishes anyone hoping to finish it in a hurry.
The set's signature is its secret rares: the "crosshatch" holos numbered above the printed count, headlined by Charizard, Ho-oh, Kabutops, and Golem. These cards use a distinctive fine-line holo pattern found nowhere else, and Skyridge Charizard in particular has become a grail-tier vintage card — a status it earned partly through genuine scarcity and partly through the fact that it's simply gorgeous. The H-numbered holo subset carries its own weight too, with Umbreon, Gyarados, Houndoom, and Starmie all commanding serious attention.
What makes Skyridge beloved among collectors isn't just the top-end chase cards — it's the depth. The reverse-holo-adjacent structure, the enormous number of cards that hold real value across the checklist, and the era-defining artwork give the set a reputation as one of the hardest and most satisfying vintage runs to complete. Very little English sealed product survived, which pushes nearly everyone toward singles and makes high-grade copies of even mid-tier cards genuinely tough to source.
For collectors, Skyridge sits at the intersection of nostalgia and prestige. It's the last gasp of Wizards of the Coast's stewardship of the English game, and its cards have aged into some of the most respected in the hobby. Building it is a statement.
