Why Deoxys matters
EX Deoxys landed in early 2005 as the eighth English EX-series expansion, riding the wave of the Deoxys movie and the Hoenn generation's peak popularity. On paper it's a small set — barely over a hundred cards printed, with a single Secret Rare pushing the numbered total one past the printed count. But small doesn't mean simple. This is a set defined almost entirely by its rarest tier, and that tier happens to contain some of the most iconic cards the EX era ever produced.
The headline is the Gold Star roster. EX Deoxys is the debut home of the Rayquaza Gold Star, a card that has become shorthand for the entire EX Gold Star mechanic and one of the most recognizable Pokémon cards ever printed. Alongside it sit the Latias and Latios Gold Stars, giving the set three of the alt-art-style holofoil Stars that collectors chase across the whole era. Add the Rocket's Raikou ex Secret Rare, the Rayquaza ex, and the surprisingly beloved Ludicolo holo and you have a set where nearly all the money and prestige clusters at the very top.
What makes EX Deoxys stand out beyond the Stars is how strong its supporting holos are. The Gyarados and Jirachi holos are quietly some of the best-loved cards in the set, and even the non-holo Rayquaza (number 22) commands real attention thanks to the character's popularity. Deoxys itself appears in multiple forms — Normal, Attack, Defense and Speed Forme deliveries scattered through the set — tying the whole expansion to the movie tie-in that gave it its name.
Among EX-era collectors, Deoxys is remembered as one of the crown-jewel sets precisely because of the Rayquaza Gold Star. It's the card that anchors nearly every "greatest EX cards" conversation, and its presence pulls the whole set's reputation upward. This is a set people don't complete casually — they complete it because they want to own that top tier and are willing to build the rest of the checklist around it.
