What to target in Battle Styles

The top 10 cards are 70% of the set’s $839.00 estimated singles cost — plan these first and the rest follows on a normal budget.

Value here concentrates heavily at the top — a large majority of the set's total chase cost sits in a short list of cards, and Tyranitar V is the single card doing the most work. It's the only card in the set clearing the top price tier, and it's the one that anchors both the collector and the grading conversation. Below it, the field is broad and shallow: a cluster of ultra rares and rainbows that individually stay affordable, which is exactly why the set is friendly to a full run.

The interesting split is between what costs money and what collectors love. The two Urshifu rainbow VMAX cards and Victini VMAX carry price tags on rarity and nostalgia, but the card people genuinely adore is the secret Houndoom — a quiet, art-forward single that punches above its price band on affection. Mimikyu V and Empoleon V land in the same happy zone: cheap enough to grab, pretty enough to grade. If you're buying for the wall rather than the ledger, Houndoom and the two Urshifu V full arts give you the most character per dollar.

About this set

Why Battle Styles matters

Battle Styles landed in March 2021 as the fifth main Sword & Shield expansion, and it did something unusually clean for a Pokémon set: it built its whole identity around a single mechanic. The new Single Strike and Rapid Strike styles split cards into two competing archetypes, headlined by the twin Urshifu VMAX lines — one all raw power, one all fluid combos. For a stretch of the era, that gimmick genuinely shaped Standard, and the set became a fixture of competitive shelves as well as collector ones.

The card count runs to 163 printed with a 20-card secret run pushing the master set to 183. The gallery is loaded with V and VMAX cards, full-art trainers, and rainbow rares, but the piece everyone actually talks about is a secret-rare regular Houndoom illustrated as a moody, atmospheric single-Pokémon scene. It's the sleeper darling of the set — not the most expensive card, but the one collectors point to when they explain why Battle Styles is worth opening.

On the V-card side, Tyranitar V is the standout muscle: a clean, aggressive alt-art-adjacent full art that carries the top of the value chart. Empoleon V and Mimikyu V both earned reputations as strong-looking, gradeable ultra rares, and the twin Urshifu rainbow VMAX cards anchor the secret rares. Victini VMAX rounds out the rainbow tier, and Phoebe is the trainer full art that collectors chase for the artwork rather than the format.

Among Sword & Shield sets, Battle Styles sits in the "well-liked, fairly priced, easy to enjoy" bucket. It never became a hype monster the way later chase-heavy sets did, which keeps sealed and singles both reasonable, and its cleanest cards grade well. It's the kind of set people recommend to someone who wants to rip a modern box without mortgaging anything.

Collecting strategy

The smart way to complete Battle Styles

Battle Styles is one of the more forgiving modern master sets to attempt: a big commons-and-uncommons base that fills fast from a box or two, and a chase list where only one card commands real money. The smart play is to open sealed for the bulk and the fun, then snipe the handful of ultra rares and secrets as singles once you see where the gaps are.

Because a single card carries so much of the set's value and the rest of the chase list is cheap, the math tilts toward singles for anyone who specifically wants the hits — you'll pay less buying Tyranitar V and the Urshifu rainbows outright than chasing them through packs. Sealed makes sense if you value the experience of ripping and want to knock out the base set cheaply as a side effect. The page shows the live break-even, but as a rule this is a "buy the box for fun, buy the chases as singles" set.

Grading

Which Battle Styles cards are worth grading?

Grading pays off at the top of this set and mostly nowhere else. Tyranitar V is the obvious candidate — it's the card with enough value headroom that a clean gem grade meaningfully separates from a raw copy. Victini V and VMAX, Empoleon V, and Mimikyu V round out the EV-positive tier: attractive cards that grade well and where a high grade adds enough to justify the fee, provided you start with a copy that has sharp centering and a clean holo.

Below that group, the returns thin out fast. Most of the set's commons, uncommons, and lower rainbows aren't worth submitting — the grading fee eats the upside. The live EV figures on the page tell you exactly where the line sits, but the practical rule is: grade the named cards if they're clean, sit on the rest.

Tier 2 — grade clean copiesClean copies only

Market outlook

Where Battle Styles goes from here

Battle Styles was printed in large quantities during the era's supply ramp, so this isn't a scarcity story. The base set and lower rares will stay cheap, and there's no realistic path to those appreciating meaningfully. What sustains long-term interest is the top of the set: Tyranitar V as a genuinely strong-looking chase, the two Urshifu rainbows as recognizable era icons, and the secret Houndoom as a beloved art card that people keep buying regardless of format. Those cards have the demand base to hold and slowly climb as clean copies get pulled into graded slabs.

Reprint risk on the specific chase cards is low — these V and VMAX designs are tied to this set — but the plentiful supply caps upside on everything below the top tier. Treat it as a set to collect because you like the cards and the theme, with the top handful being the pieces that carry any real staying power. As always, collect what you love here rather than betting on the mid-tier moving.

Not financial advice — live prices and trends are above, collect what you love.

FAQ

Battle Styles — frequently asked questions

What are the Single Strike and Rapid Strike styles in Battle Styles?

They're the two combat archetypes the set is built around, introduced by the twin Urshifu VMAX lines. Single Strike cards lean into raw damage, while Rapid Strike cards favor flexible, combo-driven attacks. The mechanic ran through much of the mid Sword & Shield era.

What is the best card in Battle Styles?

By value, Tyranitar V is the clear top card and the only one in the set's highest price tier. By collector affection, the secret-rare Houndoom is the standout — an art-forward card people love well beyond its modest price.

How many cards are in the Battle Styles set?

The printed set is 163 cards, with a 20-card secret-rare run bringing the full master set to 183. That includes V, VMAX, full-art trainers, and rainbow rares in the secret stretch.

Is Battle Styles worth opening or should I buy singles?

For the base set and casual fun, opening is enjoyable and fills most of the list. For the actual hits, singles are usually cheaper — especially Tyranitar V and the rainbow Urshifu VMAX cards, which you're unlikely to hit efficiently through packs.

Which Battle Styles cards are worth grading?

Tyranitar V leads the list, followed by Victini V and VMAX, Empoleon V, and Mimikyu V — attractive cards with enough value headroom to justify the fee if the copy is clean and well-centered. Most of the rest isn't worth submitting.

Why is the Houndoom card so popular?

It's a secret-rare regular Houndoom with a moody, atmospheric single-Pokémon illustration that collectors consider one of the best-looking cards of the era. It stays affordable, which makes it a favorite pickup for people who collect for the art.
